Abstract

Parkinson¡¯s disease is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motor symptoms. Identification of Parkinson¡¯s disease subtypes is one of the top clinical and research priorities as it helps understand the underlying pathophysiology, predict prognosis, and develop personalized rehabilitation. However, there is no clear method to classify Parkinson¡¯s disease subtypes. Thus, this review aimed to summarize the traditional subtyping methods that have been demonstrated so far and to provide an update on recent challenges in subtyping via data-driven methods. We updated the subtyping trials via cluster analysis using quantitative gait analysis data. Subtyping could be improved by using multiple data such as motor and non-motor symptoms, imaging, and genetic biomarkers.
